Welcome to my blog......

The purpose of this blog is to remember the fallen heroes of the Great War, whose names are recorded on the memorial plaque situated in St Barnabas Church, New Whittington, Chesterfield.

To mark the centenary of World War 1 I aim to research all of the men on the memorial. I hope to ensure that the brave men who gave their lives for their country 100 years ago are remembered and each man's story told.

I would love to hear from anyone who may have information regarding the men; photos, letters or passed down memories. Any descendents are most welcome to contact me and I will provide copies of the research that I have undertaken.

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left to grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them"

For The Fallen,

About the project

I began this project after researching my own Great Uncle Arthur Wedgwood who is named on the St Barnabas Memorial.

I will use various sources to hopefully bring the men and their families story to life for us all to remember their sacrifice.

I am undertaking this research on a purely voluntary basis.  Funds will be limited due to the large number of men which will need to be researched.  Thus it is unfortunate that in most cases I will not be able to purchase copies of birth/marriage/death certificates to confirm my research.  However, if possible I will visit archives and consult parish registers to clarify my work.

Each soldier will have a family tree available publicly on www.ancestry.co.uk - the tree will be searchable by the family name eg, "Cooper family tree (15)".  The number in brackets is my reference for my files.

If any family members are kind enough to provide me with further information such as photos, certificates, family stories etc then I will only publish these onto the blog with their permission.  I can not however take responsibility for any use of these items after the blog has been published.

I will kindly provide any interested parties with copies of my research via email.

Please note that my work is copyright and can only be used for further use with my prior consent.

Thank you for reading my blog to remember the Fallen Heroes of WW1 - St Barnabas Memorial, New Whittington.
